Advanced illness brings many emotions and responses to the forefront and can present challenges for the patient, family/caregiver, and professional caregiver. When anger, fear, and other intense emotions surface individuals are sometimes labelled as “difficult”. This program identifies emotions and responses to advanced illness, describes the role of and techniques of compassionate communication, discusses some of the challenging personality types and behaviors and concludes with communication techniques to address those situations. Appropriate for presentation in all care settings as well as to community groups.
